Just as we change our wardrobe according to the season, have you thought about your skincare routine? As summer fades and autumn approaches, it's the perfect time to re-evaluate your beauty regimen. The change in seasons brings about shifts in temperature, humidity, and environmental factors that can impact your skin. Transitioning your skincare routine from summer to fall is a must and often forgotten. Not to worry, I am here to help you make the transition seamlessly with these six easy steps.

1. Evaluate Your Current Routine

Before making any changes, take a moment to assess your current skincare routine. Are the products that you are using tackle the challenges that your skin may face during the colder season? During the summer, you may have favored lightweight skincare products that provided hydration without feeling heavy. As the weather cools down, your skinā€™s needs will shift, so it's important to understand whatā€™s working and what might need adjusting.

2. Switch to a Hydrating Cleanser

In the summer, you might have relied on a gel or foaming cleanser to manage excess oil and sweat. As fall approaches, switch to a cream or hydrating cleanser. These formulas help to maintain your skin's moisture balance and prevent dryness. Look for cleansers with nourishing ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin to keep your skin feeling soft and hydrated. I have combination skin, so wind, temperature, and humidity wreak havoc on my skin. That's why I focus on gentle, hydrating cleansers in the fall, along with clean makeup options like Ilia products that keep my skin balanced. I enjoy using the Burt's Bees Micellar Facial Towelettes With Rose Water as they are great for removing makeup, cleanse and tone my skin all-in-one.

3. Revise Your Moisturizer: Introducing One Skin

Summerā€™s lightweight moisturizers may no longer provide enough hydration as the air gets cooler and drier. Transition to a richer moisturizer that includes ingredients such as ceramides, squalane, or shea butter (just to name a few). One product Iā€™m excited to recommend for this season is from One Skin, whose scientifically blended face and body creams are perfect for the cooler months ahead. Powered by OS-01, a peptide proven to reverse skin aging, One Skinā€™s formula is designed to target skin health at the molecular level. Their creams donā€™t contain hyaluronic acid, making them a great alternative if youā€™re looking to try something new. Plus, they offer a special trial package, complete with a travel bagā€”perfect for fall getaways or testing out their wash and creams at a discounted price. Itā€™s a fun and convenient way to experience their product line.

4. Adjust Exfoliation Practices

Exfoliation is crucial for maintaining a fresh complexion, but the type and frequency may need to change with the seasons. Dr. Nathan Halt shares that as the weather cools, opt for gentler exfoliants to avoid over-stripping your skin and in turn causing dryness. Consider using a chemical exfoliant with lactic acid or fruit enzymes a few times a week to gently remove dead skin cells without causing irritation. For those in their 50s, adjusting exfoliation practices is especially important to avoid compromising the skinā€™s natural barrier.

5. Introduce a Hydrating Serum

As fall sets in, incorporating a hydrating serum into your skincare routine can provide an extra layer of moisture. Look for serums containing hyaluronic acid or peptides to boost hydration and improve skin texture. According to this study, twice-daily application of a hyaluronic acid-based serum and a peptide-rich cream over 12 weeks led to significant improvements in skin texture, tone, and helps diminish wrinkles. This study proves that these key ingredients will help your skin retain moisture and can also support a healthy, glowing complexion.

6. Donā€™t Skip Sunscreen

Even though the sunā€™s intensity might lessen in the fall, UV rays can still affect your skin. Continue using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day. Opt for sunscreens with added moisturizing benefits if your skin tends to get drier in cooler weather. Personally, I enjoy using Jan Marini's Physical Protectant SPF 45ā€”it not only provides excellent sun protection but also hydrates my skin, making it perfect for those cooler, drier autumn days.

By making these simple adjustments, you can ensure your skincare routine remains effective and keeps your skin looking radiant as you transition into the fall season. Embrace these changes and enjoy a healthy, glowing complexion throughout the autumn months!
