Happy Father’s Day!

Celebrating Father's Day with a BBQ is a tradition for many families, but it doesn't have to mean sacrificing healthy eating. By making mindful choices, we can enjoy all the flavors of a classic BBQ while keeping it nutritious. From selecting lean meats to incorporating plenty of vegetables, there's a way to make every bite count towards a healthier you.

Grilling Tips

Grilling is a fantastic way to cook because it adds a unique flavor without the need for extra fats. Here are some tips to make your grilling healthier:

  • Choose Lean Meats: Opt for chicken breasts, turkey burgers, or fish. These proteins are lower in fat compared to traditional BBQ favorites like ribs or sausages. According to Diabities.co.uk lean meat, such as, poultry is a great source of choline, vitamins B3 and B6, and selenium (which is packed with antioxidants).
  • Marinate Smart: Use marinades made from olive oil, vinegar, lemon juice, and a variety of herbs and spices. Not only do they add flavor, but they also help reduce the formation of harmful compounds that can occur during grilling.
  • Incorporate Vegetables: Grill a variety of vegetables like bell peppers, zucchini, and asparagus. Vegetables can add color, flavor, and essential nutrients to your BBQ spread. Try my Grilled Summer Vegetables with Tahini Dressing recipe (ADD LINK) - a family favorite!

Duane’s Favorite BBQ Recipe

Now, let's get to the star of our blog post. I love family meals! They bring everyone together and is an opportunity for family time. My husband, Duane, has a favorite recipe that I would like to share and will be cooking for him this Father’s day: “Grilled Kurobuta Pork Chops”. This dish is a guaranteed hit and as it’s one of my own recipes of course it brings a healthy twist.

Presentation and Serving

Not only is the meal important but a well-presented one can make any occasion feel extra special. Here are some tips to present your Father’s Day BBQ beautifully and serve it in moderation:

  • Colorful Platters: Use a mix of grilled vegetables and fresh salads to add color and vibrancy to your spread.
  • Garnish with Fresh Herbs: Sprinkle chopped herbs like parsley or cilantro over your dishes for an added touch of freshness. My family and I enjoy sourcing our herbs from the garden for that fresh touch.
  • Portion Sizes: Serve food in smaller portions to encourage moderation and to allow everyone to enjoy a variety of dishes without overindulging.

This Father's Day, let’s celebrate with a BBQ that’s both delicious and healthy. By following these grilling tips you can enjoy a nutritious feast with your loved ones. Remember, it’s all about making mindful choices and savoring every moment together. Happy Father’s Day and happy grilling!
