It's National Tequila Day! Let's celebrate with these slimming summer cocktails.
A hot day out in the sun calls for a cool drink in your hand. Especially on National Tequila Day!
If you are looking for a healthy alcoholic beverage this summer, choose tequila as your base. Tequila boasts a low calorie, carb, and sugar count. The natural sugar in the agave plant is also non-digestible and does not spike your blood sugar. Below are three ideal tequila-based drinks that refresh and satisfy without the mounds of sugar or calories. Keep in mind, if you do not have a cocktail shaker at home, you can use any cup or glass that seals. If you do not have a muddler, just use the back of a spoon to press the ingredients into the bottom of the glass.
This sweet and spicy cocktail makes for the perfect happy hour drink. Don’t forget to rim your cup with tajín before pouring in the goods—this will complete your perfect summer concoction.
- 1 shot tequila

- ½ can of sparkling water (lime flavor works best)
- 1 lime wedge
- tajín, for rimming
- ice
1. Cut a quarter of a lime and rim your glass.
2. Pour some tajín onto your cutting board and flip the glass upside down so the tajín will stick to the moist rim.
3. Add ice, tequila, limeade, jalapeño, and sparkling water.
4. Squeeze the rest of your lime into the drink and stir.
This tequila and grapefruit cocktail tastes as refreshing as it looks. Mix together tequila, lime, and grapefruit juice and pour over ice. That tiny pinch of salt maximizes your drink’s flavor as it draws out the sweetness in the grapefruit and suppresses its bitterness.
- 1 shot tequila
- 1 shot grapefruit juice
- ½ lime
- pinch of salt
- sparkling water to top off drink (grapefruit flavor works best)
- ice
1. Add ice, tequila, grapefruit juice, and salt into a cocktail shaker. Squeeze in the ½ lime.
2. Shake the drink so that the salt can release the sweetness in the grapefruit juice.
3. Pour into your glass and top off with sparkling water.
